What is Methylone?

Methylone is an empathogen and stimulant drug. Methylone is the substituted cauthinone analog of MDMDA and the 3,4-methylenedioxy analog of methcathinone. Effects of using methylone may include; chest pains; high blood pressure; increased heart rate; agitation, hallucinations; delusions; paranoia; and suicidal thoughts.

It is difficult to regulate or control substances such as methylone because the chemical structures of synthetic cathinones change too often to be immediately criminalized. According to Toxnet, modest to moderately severe side effects may include: increase in heart rate and blood pressure; general change in consciousness (as with most psychoactives); pupil dilation, can lead to blurred vision; difficulty in focusing, restlessness; change in perception of time; slight increase in body temperature; muscle tension and aching; and trismus and bruxism. The most severe side effects of methylone use may include: insomnia; hyperthermia and sweating; dizziness, confusion; depersonalization, hallucinations, paranoia, fear (with high doses; unwanted life-changing spiritual experiences; gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea and vomiting; skin rashes are common; and hangover may include exhaustion, depression, disorientation, and headache.

One of the greatest dangers of methylone and other synthetic drugs arises from the ease of procurement. The drugs can be sold as bath salts, plant food, jewelry cleaner, or other substances labeled as “not for human consumption” to avoid law enforcement seizures. Another danger it that these synthetic cathinones, specifically methylone, may be advertised by drug dealers as purely MDMA, even though their chemical structure is quite different. The Toxicology Data Network presents a case study of a healthy 24-year-old who ingested a capsule containing methylone and butylone sold as “Ecstasy.”

The Case Study explains, “The patient presented to the emergency department, comatose febrile, tachycardic, tachypneic, and hypertensive. On exam, she was diaphoretic, tremulous, hyperreflexic, and had sustained clonus. The patient was aggressively cooled, and despite maximal supportive care, the patient progressed to multi-system organ failure and ultimately expired. /Clinicians/ obtained and analyzed both her urine and a capsule found on her person similar to the capsules ingested. In both samples, laboratory analysis identified only methylone and butylone. This is the first reported death for methylone or butylone and the first human or animal ingestion of butylone.” Sadly, many others are losing their lives by taking buying and using drugs that they thought were MDMA but were actually a much more dangerous combination of synthetic cathinones.
